LEGO Decimal Mechanism

3D animation render of an actual working LEGO mechanism. Basically, for every ten rotations of the handle on the back, the pointer on the front makes one rotation. However, this is not just your average, ordinary gearing! If you look closely, you will notice that this mechanism takes an analog (continuous) motion and outputs a digital (not continuous) motion in the opposite direction along the same rotational axis! And what makes it truly amazing is the fact that it is at a 1:10 ratio.

As far as the actual 3D work goes, the piece models are (c) those wonderful people who have contributed to LeoCAD. The rigging, lighting and animating is (c) yours truly.

I love mechanical stuff like this, and I always found analog->digital type mechanisms interesting. Not 100% sure how this particular one works, but hurray for lego
